Columbia Journalism School has appointed veteran journalist Pallavi Gogoi as executive director of the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism.

Gogoi will begin the role on August 17, succeeding Robert Smith, who has directed the program since 2021. She will lead one of Columbia Journalism School’s signature professional programs for experienced journalists covering business, economics, finance and technology.

The Knight-Bagehot Fellowship combines advanced journalism instruction at Columbia Journalism School with business courses at Columbia Business School. Fellows also participate in private seminars with leaders from media, finance, business and technology.

Gogoi brings more than 25 years of experience across journalism and education. She has served as NPR’s chief business editor for nearly a decade, helping guide the organization’s coverage of companies, financial markets and the broader economy.

Her career also includes positions at CNN, the Associated Press, USA Today, BusinessWeek and Dow Jones/The Wall Street Journal. This range of experience gives her extensive insight into how different news organizations approach business and economic reporting.

Gogoi has also taught courses on economic narratives at Columbia Journalism School and Princeton University. Her combination of newsroom leadership and teaching experience closely aligns with the fellowship’s mission of helping journalists make complex economic subjects understandable and relevant.

Founded in 1975, the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship has supported generations of mid-career journalists seeking deeper expertise in business and economics. Under Gogoi’s leadership, the program will enter its sixth decade while continuing to prepare journalists to produce informed and accessible coverage.
