The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine has appointed Indian-origin physician-scientist Satdarshan Pal Singh Monga as chair of its Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology.
Monga is a leading liver researcher whose work has advanced scientific understanding of liver development, regeneration, metabolism and disease. His laboratory studies the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in liver repair and cancer, with particular attention to Wnt and beta-catenin signaling.
His research has contributed to the development of potential precision treatments for liver cancer. This includes approaches targeting beta-catenin-driven hepatocellular carcinoma that have progressed into clinical trials.
Monga has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health and industry since 2003. He has authored more than 230 peer-reviewed publications in journals including Nature, Hepatology, Gastroenterology, Cell Metabolism and the Journal of Hepatology.
In addition to his new position, Monga serves as the University of Pittsburgh’s senior vice chancellor chair in Pathobiology and Therapeutics. He is also director of the Organ Pathobiology and Therapeutics Institute, director of the Pittsburgh Liver Research Center and associate dean of research at the School of Medicine.
Monga joined the University of Pittsburgh in 1999 and has held several research and academic leadership positions during his tenure. He previously served as director and vice chair of Experimental Pathology and helped establish the Pittsburgh Liver Research Center.
He earned his medical degree from Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in India. He later completed postdoctoral training in gastroenterology, hepatology and molecular biology at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Temple University and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
His appointment places an accomplished physician-scientist at the head of a department working across drug discovery, disease biology and translational medicine.
