What is ASAN?

We are a community, media platform, and research entity that elevates, empowers, and highlights South Asian challenges, lessons, and successes.

What is ASAN's mission?

ASAN is committed to empowering and uniting South Asians across the United States. We support creators, entrepreneurs, and leaders to build community, enhance cultural representation, and advance socioeconomic equity. ASAN celebrates excellence, drives meaningful change, and reshapes narratives within and beyond the South Asian diaspora.

What does ASAN do?

tldr; We ask all our members to be a resource for someone else – in a capacity that is available to you at that time. You could do so in time, talent, and treasure. Time commitment could vary from a couple hours a quarter to a few hours a week.

Some examples of your involvement include:

  • Attending our events in various locations, which include a mix of indoor and outdoor activities. Have a great time while sharing experiences, knowledge, and memories and connecting with like-minded people.
  • Introducing potential members to ASAN.
  • A single interaction where you share your experiences, knowledge, and wisdom with those looking to walk in your footsteps or learn from you.
  • Becoming an advisor, perhaps a personal mentor, to someone building / growing their business.
  • Helping someone find an internship or a job.
  • Creating and administering an event/ program catering to/ helping the South Asian community.
  • Providing your office or another location for events hosted by our partner nonprofit organizations, or writing a check to causes that connect with you.
  • Becoming an executive team member, or a volunteer and working hand-in-glove with us.
Who can apply to join this community?

There are no restrictions. Our target demographic is South Asians between the ages of 10-50  years. You will have the best results if you live in the US, interact with, travel to, prospect / do business with people in the US.

I don’t live in the US, should I still join?

Yes if: you travel frequently to the US, have family/ relatives in the US, want to or currently do business with US-based companies, plan to move to the US for studies or work.

How can I join the community?

You can join by signing up on our website and filling out the membership form.

Is there a membership fee?

Basic membership is free. Paid members, partners, and sponsors get additional benefits. Please join the community and reach out if you are interested in learning more.

What does it mean to be a member, what am I committing to? How do I contribute?

Are you competing with other South Asian organizations?

Not at all. We collaborate with and are partners to several South Asian organizations. If you are aware of any that we should be a partner with, please connect us.

What about Indiaspora, TiE and other organizations?

We love Indiaspora and TiE and have been long time collaborators, members, and supporters of both. If you know of other organizations working on helping and bringing South Asians together, please connect us / reach out.

Who else is part of this community?

Our target demographic is South Asians between 10-50 years old though we welcome all. Members are all of ages, shapes, skin color, sizes and include artists, entrepreneurs, executives, investors, philanthropists, public servants, students, and teenagers.

What areas do you operate in?

We are a US-based national organization. One of our bases is in Southern California though we have hubs and members all over the country.

How do I become a member?

All members apply here to join. Application does not guarantee membership.

What information do you collect and what do you do with it?

We only collect basic information such as your name, email, phone number and LinkedIn profile to determine if we are a good fit for you. Your information is not shared with any third parties.

How long does it take to process my application?

Typically a few hours and no more than 48 hours.

I am a student, can/ should I join?

Absolutely. Being a resource for students is one of our key impact areas. Helping explore career pathways, building networks, mentorship, and finding/ connecting with role models are some of the specific areas of our work.

I have access to an International Student Association at my university. Do I still need to join ASAN?

We are not here to replace your International Student Office or South Asian Student Association. We do partner with them to help augment their work by providing industry connections, mentoring, and other similar services.

I don’t have a lot of time. Should I still join?

We believe so, though it depends on what you’re looking for. You can invest as little as a couple hours every few months to have a decent give and get equilibrium.

What types of activities does the community organize?

We organize a variety of activities and events including cultural events, mixers, outdoor activities, social gatherings, and workshops.

How can I participate in events?

Our events are posted on our website here, and in the community. You can also follow us on lu.ma/asan.

Are your events family-friendly?

Yes. Our youngest attendee to date is a 13 month old and the other youngest was 78 years, though we didn’t ask for proof of age in either case 🙂

How can I connect with other members?

You can connect through our online forums, social media groups, or by attending our events.

Does the community offer resources specifically for South Asians on: aging, culture and languages, domestic abuse and violence, mental health and well-being, parenting?

Several of our partner organizations do stellar work in these spaces. Our primary goal is to promote their work and bring more awareness to their activities and resources. Where necessary, we may partner with other organizations to create/ host additional events and resources.

Can I volunteer with the community?

Yes! There are multiple opportunities and you’ll be able to connect with us from within the community. Some examples of volunteering opportunities include raising awareness about ASAN, identifying and outreach to potential and existing partner organizations, and organizing events.

How can I stay updated on community news and events?

All members will have access to the online community where you’ll receive relevant information on our activities and upcoming events,

What activities are available for teenagers and young adults?

Pre teens and teens attend our mixers, social gatherings and outdoor activities. Several started reluctantly though over the past few months have become active participants. A few have gone on to take the lead and design their own events. Few others have hosted fireside chats and panel discussions with established and successful entrepreneurs and executives.

Are there any mentorship programs available for non-students?

We believe we are all students for life, or should be. We know you mean non-academic students. In short, yes. Please join the community and tell us what specific areas you are looking to be mentored in and we will reach out to our mentors to make a possible match.

Can I get involved in leadership opportunities?

Yes. We would love to learn more about your experience, interest area(s), and passion and share our gaps and needs to see where we align. Please join the community and reach out.

How can I meet other young South Asians in the community?

Just step outside and you’ll see us. We’re everywhere 🙂 As a starting point, please join our community and attend our events. The more active you are, the more likely you are to meet like-minded people.

How do you select a partner organization? Who are your partners?

Any nonprofit organization helping and serving the South Asian community would be a partner. Unless there are known issues we should not partner with an organization (for administrative, financial or legal reasons). If you are a part of a for profit organization and would like to partner with us, please join the community and reach out. We also have select sponsor plans.
