Fred Hutch honors Ajay Gopal for extraordinary mentorship

Indian American physician and cancer researcher Dr. Ajay Gopal has received the Oliver Press Award for Extraordinary Mentorship from Fred Hutch Cancer Center. The recognition covers the 2026–2028 period and honors his commitment to helping colleagues grow across roles and career stages.

Gopal is a hematologist-oncologist specializing in lymphoma. He holds the Stephen H. Petersdorf Endowed Chair in Cancer Care and serves as a professor in Fred Hutch’s Clinical Research Division and the University of Washington’s Division of Hematology and Oncology.

His leadership includes serving as director of Clinical Research for Lymphoma at Fred Hutch. He also recently became medical director for Clinical Research Support for the cancer consortium connecting Fred Hutch, the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s.

Gopal’s research focuses on developing targeted treatments for people with lymphoma. His work includes immunotherapy strategies, lower-toxicity agents for indolent lymphomas and safer treatment regimens for older adults. Alongside those scientific and clinical contributions, colleagues emphasized his willingness to share knowledge, provide constructive feedback and create opportunities for junior researchers to lead.

The award recognizes mentorship across the Fred Hutch community, including support for students, medical fellows, nurses, researchers and staff. Nominators described Gopal as someone who combines rigorous scientific standards with a sustained focus on patients and the people learning alongside him.

Named for the late physician-scientist Oliver “Ollie” Press, the award celebrates mentors who strengthen faculty development, teaching, leadership and team building. Press mentored Gopal earlier in his career, giving the recognition a personal connection. Colleagues said Gopal continues that legacy by investing in the success of others and keeping Press’ approach to mentorship alive.

The award provides a $5,000 annual stipend for two years. Fred Hutch said its 2026 selection committee unanimously chose Gopal, recognizing both his record as a mentor and his continued commitment to helping others thrive in cancer research and care.
