Indian-born banking executive Shimna Sameer named Truist consumer banking chief

Indian-born U.S. banking executive Shimna Sameer has been named chief consumer banking officer at Truist Financial Corporation, expanding her responsibilities at one of the country’s 10 largest commercial banks. The Charlotte-based company announced the appointment Oct. 16.

Sameer will report to President and CEO Mike Lyons and lead efforts to grow core deposits, deepen primary banking relationships and strengthen the customer experience. Her portfolio moves beyond the wealth-management assignment Truist announced in July and places her over a central part of the company’s retail strategy.

Truist said the leadership changes are intended to sharpen accountability and support the bank’s next phase of growth. The company reported $554 billion in assets as of Sept. 30 and maintains a leading presence in several fast-growing U.S. markets.

Sameer brings more than 20 years of experience at Bank of America across consumer banking, private banking and wealth management. Most recently, she was head of products, solutions and platforms for Bank of America Private Bank, where she managed digital platforms, business strategy, talent initiatives and the client experience.

Earlier in her career, Sameer led large client-facing operations and transformation programs. Her work included developing sales strategy, digital tools and talent programs for Merrill Edge. She began her financial-services career in 2005 as a teller and later managed thousands of employees across the Northeast.

A native of India, Sameer has also been recognized for advocating for women’s advancement and workplace inclusion. She has served on Bank of America’s Global Diversity and Inclusion Council and sponsored employee networks supporting Asian professionals and women leaders.

Sameer was initially scheduled to lead Truist Wealth from the bank’s Hudson Yards offices in New York City. Under the revised structure, interim co-heads will manage the wealth business while she takes responsibility for consumer banking and joins Truist’s senior leadership team.

Her appointment places an Indian-born executive in charge of a major national banking operation focused on household deposits and long-term customer relationships. It also marks a significant expansion of leadership scope only months after Truist first recruited her.
