Indian-Origin Professors at Penn State Named 2025 Fellows of AI Association

Two Indian-origin professors from Penn State College of Engineering have been honored as 2025 fellows by the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AAIA) for their exceptional contributions to artificial intelligence research.

Swaroop Ghosh and Vishal Monga, both professors in the Electrical Engineering department, have been recognized for their groundbreaking work in AI applications spanning drug discovery, healthcare, and imaging science.

Recognizing Excellence in AI Innovation

Swaroop Ghosh, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science, was named an AAIA fellow for his pioneering research in artificial intelligence for drug discovery and autonomous systems.

His work emphasizes energy-efficient AI computing, cybersecurity, and healthcare technologies. Before joining academia, Ghosh worked as a senior R&D engineer at Intel and earned his Ph.D. from Purdue University.

Vishal Monga, a professor of electrical engineering, was honored for his outstanding research in data science and AI methods in imaging science.

His research focuses on creating robust and interpretable AI models for signal and image processing, contributing significantly to medical imaging and related fields.

Monga holds 45 U.S. patents and has held research positions at Xerox Labs, Microsoft Research, and the University of Rochester.

Accolades and Impact

Both professors have received numerous awards throughout their careers. Ghosh is an IEEE Fellow, a distinguished ACM speaker, and a recipient of the DARPA Young Faculty Award, among others.

Monga was awarded the NSF CAREER Award and inducted into the National Academy of Inventors in 2022.

Thomas La Porta, director of Penn State’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, praised the professors, saying, “Their elevation to AAIA fellows highlights their remarkable research achievements and the esteem they hold in the AI community.”
