Kumar Venkitanarayanan Named Interim CAHNR Dean at UConn

Dr. Kumar Venkitanarayanan is in the news as the University of Connecticut (UConn) has announced the appointment of the esteemed Indian-American veterinarian and professor of animal science as the interim dean of the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources (CAHNR).

He steps into the role following the departure of former dean Dr. Indrajeet Chaubey, who now serves as provost at the University of Arkansas.

With a career spanning over two decades in food safety and animal science, Dr. Venkitanarayanan is internationally recognized for his research on egg and poultry meat safety.

His work has focused on developing organic, antibiotic-free antimicrobial solutions to combat foodborne pathogens, an area of critical importance in the era of antibiotic resistance.

Leading Sustainable Research with National Impact

Currently, Dr. Venkitanarayanan is leading a $10 million research project funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA).

The project, aimed at promoting sustainable poultry production, is designed to enhance bird welfare, human health, and environmental sustainability through innovative practices.

A Proven Leader in Research and International Collaboration

Before his interim dean appointment, Dr. Venkitanarayanan served as CAHNR’s senior associate dean for research and graduate studies.

In this role, he was instrumental in building international partnerships, particularly with leading universities in India, opening doors for student exchanges, collaborative research, and cross-cultural academic enrichment.

His outstanding contributions to food science were recognized in 2021 when he was named a Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), a prestigious honor awarded to individuals who have demonstrated excellence in the field of food technology.

UConn’s Commitment to Continuity and Excellence

UConn Provost Anne D’Alleva, who announced the appointment, expressed strong confidence in Dr. Venkitanarayanan’s ability to lead CAHNR through this transitional period.

“Dr. Venkitanarayanan is deeply committed to the success of CAHNR, its people, and the communities it serves. I am grateful to him for stepping into this role and for the continuity and leadership he will provide,” D’Alleva said.

As interim dean, Dr. Venkitanarayanan will oversee strategic planning, faculty and student success initiatives, and the advancement of research and extension programs across Connecticut and beyond.

In a statement, he remarked, “I am honored to support the teaching, research, and extension mission at CAHNR. I am excited to continue seeking creative strategies to elevate CAHNR’s unique strengths and amplify our impactful programs that serve every corner of Connecticut and communities worldwide.”

Leadership Transition and Future Plans

Dr. Venkitanarayanan will serve as interim dean while the university conducts a national search for a permanent successor.\

During his tenure, Dr. Ock Chun, a professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, will serve as the interim associate dean for research and graduate studies, effective August 24, 2025.

This leadership shift marks a new chapter for CAHNR, which remains a cornerstone of UConn’s academic and research excellence.
