Dr. Prabhleen Chahal Becomes First in Texas to Earn Prestigious MASGE Title

The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) has honored Dr. Prabhleen Chahal, MD, FASGE, FACG, with the distinguished title of Master Endoscopist and the designation of Master of ASGE (MASGE).

This recognition places Dr. Chahal among an elite group of physicians known for their exceptional contributions to patient care, education, research, and advocacy in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy. She is the first individual in Texas to receive this prestigious honor.

 

A Historic Achievement in Gastroenterology

Dr. Chahal serves as the Steven Schenker Distinguished Professor in Medicine (Tenure) and Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Human Nutrition at the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio.

Her expertise lies in advanced endoscopy, with a focus on interventional endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), both critical procedures for diagnosing and treating complex gastrointestinal diseases.

With a career spanning over 20 years, Dr. Chahal has been at the forefront of gastroenterology innovation and education.

She has authored over 150 peer-reviewed books and articles and played an instrumental role in training the next generation of gastroenterologists. Many of her 40+ mentees have gone on to become national leaders in the field.

Her contributions extend beyond patient care and research, she is an influential figure in ASGE’s leadership, currently serving as:

  • Chair of the ASGE Membership Committee
  • Vice Chair of the ASGE ERCP Special Interest Group
  • Inaugural Chair of the ASGE Women’s Special Interest Group

Additionally, Dr. Chahal has led multiple national society committees and contributed to various gastroenterology education initiatives, including serving as course co-director for ASGE postgraduate courses and webinars at the prestigious Digestive Disease Week (DDW) conference.

The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) is a global organization with over 16,000 members dedicated to advancing the field of endoscopy.

To date, only 43 Master Endoscopist awards have been given to ASGE members worldwide, and 91 individuals have received the MASGE designation.

Candidates for this honor are nominated by ASGE board members or past leaders and must meet rigorous criteria that align with ASGE’s mission to advance patient care and medical education in gastrointestinal endoscopy.
