The University of Kansas (KU) has named Raj Bhala, an internationally acclaimed legal scholar and professor at the KU School of Law, as a distinguished professor.
The prestigious appointment, one of the highest academic honors at KU, will take effect at the start of the fall 2025 semester.
Bhala, an Indian-American scholar widely respected for his expertise in international trade law and policy, joins a select group of faculty recognized for their outstanding contributions to research, teaching, and academic leadership.
A Leader in Global Trade Law
Over his decades-long career, Bhala has emerged as a thought leader in international trade law, bridging legal theory, economic policy, and global diplomacy.
His scholarship spans 13 published books and more than 100 law review articles. Notably, his eight-volume International Trade Law: A Comprehensive E-Textbook is regarded as a foundational global resource for legal practitioners, scholars, and students alike.
Beyond the classroom, Bhala has served as associate dean for international and comparative law at KU and has held the inaugural Leo S. Brenneisen and the Raymond F. Rice distinguished professorships, further affirming his academic legacy at the institution.
A Global Voice in Law and Policy
As a Fulbright Specialist, Bhala has shared his expertise at leading institutions including George Washington University Law School and William & Mary Law School.
He also serves as a speaker for the U.S. Department of State, representing American legal scholarship on the world stage.
