Gautam Kamath awarded 2026 Godel Prize for computer science

Gautam Kamath, an Indian-origin computer scientist and assistant professor at the University of Waterloo, has been awarded the 2026 Godel Prize for major contributions to theoretical computer science.

The prize recognizes Kamath and collaborators Ilias Diakonikolas, Daniel Kane, Jerry Li, Ankur Moitra, and Alistair Stewart for their paper, Robust Estimators in High-Dimensions without the Computational Intractability. Their work addressed a long-standing challenge in computer science and statistics: how to make reliable estimates from large, complex datasets even when some of the data is corrupted or unreliable.

That problem matters well beyond theory. Modern artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, healthcare, finance, and scientific systems all depend on massive datasets. In the real world, those datasets can include errors, outliers, missing information, or manipulated records. Kamath’s research helped show that robust learning can be both accurate and computationally efficient, even in high-dimensional settings.

Kamath is a faculty member at Waterloo’s Cheriton School of Computer Science, a Canada CIFAR AI Chair, and a member of the Vector Institute. His research focuses on trustworthy data analysis, machine learning, differential privacy, robustness, and statistical algorithms.

The Godel Prize is awarded jointly by the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science and the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Algorithms and Computation Theory. It is widely regarded as the top publication award in theoretical computer science.

Kamath’s recognition also comes during a standout year. He received the 2026 Presburger Award earlier this year and is expected to join New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences in September 2026.

For South Asian Americans in science and technology, Kamath’s award is a meaningful milestone. It highlights the role Indian-origin researchers continue to play in shaping the foundations of artificial intelligence, data science, and the future of computing.
