The 33rd Annual Gala for SAHARA (South Asian Helpline and Referral Agency) was held on September 15th, 2024 in Seal Beach, California. More than 260 members of our community gathered to show their support for survivors of domestic violence and elder abuse. The evening was filled with stories of hope and resilience as survivors shared their journeys to self sufficiency.
President Krutika Pranav outlined SAHARA’s various programs that continue to make a lasting impact. Their community outreach efforts, culturally specific counseling in regional languages, and legal aid help several thousand beneficiaries each year. “SAHARA’s second shelter home is a pivotal development that will increase our capacity to offer refuge to those in critical need, underscoring their commitment to expanding services and supporting survivors”, said Pranav.
In addition to the shelter home, SAHARA’s educational and economic empowerment programs were spotlighted, showing how the organization not only provides immediate relief but also long-term resources for individuals to rebuild their lives. SAHARA also offers support for domestic abuse, elder abuse, sexual assault, and mental health. LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn opened the evening through a pre-recorded video message, applauding SAHARA’s work in uplifting victims of abuse and those on the margins.
Riaz Patel, an Emmy nominated director and producer, keynoted the event. Applauding SAHARA’s accomplishments and efforts, Patel brought home the importance of connections, community, and communications and their impact on our mental wellbeing. “In the last 10 years, SAHARA has served over 11,500 clients. In the last 12 months alone, SAHARA attended to more than 4,800 helpline calls and provided close to 3,300 shelter bed nights to women and children”, added Pranav.
The event served as both a celebration and a fundraiser, with attendees and donors contributing to the sustainability and expansion of SAHARA’s life-changing services. Manu and Rika Shah of the Sarva Mangal Family Trust delighted guests with a lighthearted and humorous skit. It filled the room with laughter and smiles while delivering an uplifting message about the empowerment and strength of women.
The Shah’s then ignited the pledge drive by announcing a donation match challenge, doubling all contributions that evening up to $350,000. The highlight of the pledge drive was Daksha and Sudhir Kapadia announcing their $1 million pledge to SAHARA.
“I would like to thank the staff and the board members of SAHARA for making this one of our most successful events. I also want to extend my gratitude to 3D Sounds, Ajita Chopra Events, Bhagi, Dixie Patel, Mantra, and Nilesh Patel Photography”, Pranav noted.
