Pari V. Pandharipande Named Chair of Radiology at Penn Medicine

Penn Medicine appoints Dr. Pari V. Pandharipande, MD, MPH, FACR, as Chair of Radiology, marking a new era in imaging leadership.

Indian American physician-scientist Pari V. Pandharipande, MD, MPH, FACR, has been announced as the next Chair of the Department of Radiology at Penn Medicine, effective June 1, 2025.

Dr. Pandharipande, a distinguished leader in radiology and healthcare innovation, succeeds Dr. Mitchell Schnall, MD, PhD, who now serves as Penn Medicine’s inaugural Senior Vice President for Data and Technology Solutions.

Dr. Pandharipande brings decades of leadership and expertise to Penn Medicine. She has served as Chair of Radiology at The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine and Chief of Radiology Services at Wexner Medical Center since 2021.

Under her guidance, OSU expanded its imaging infrastructure, introduced new service lines, and prioritized translational research initiatives.

Her strategic vision has significantly impacted imaging excellence and clinical integration, establishing her as a leader in radiology’s rapidly evolving landscape.

“Dr. Pandharipande’s experience in leading transformative clinical integration projects at top health systems positions her uniquely to advance Penn Medicine’s ‘One Radiology’ initiative,” said Kevin B. Mahoney, CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System.

“Her expertise in imaging science and operational efficiency will drive the department to new heights in clinical care and innovation.”

A Visionary in Imaging and Healthcare Integration

Dr. Pandharipande’s tenure at OSU exemplifies her commitment to excellence. Beyond infrastructure and research advancements, she championed multidisciplinary collaboration and bolstered training programs to support the next generation of radiology professionals.

Before OSU, she spent 17 years at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), serving in numerous leadership roles.

At MGH, Dr. Pandharipande directed health outcomes research and oversaw imaging integration efforts for Mass General Brigham Radiology.

Notably, she spearheaded a transformative project to integrate imaging services across MGH, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and their community affiliates.

Her work also extended to leading the MGH Institute for Technology Assessment, a multidisciplinary research institute where she conducted NIH-funded studies on imaging and cancer outcomes.

“Dr. Pandharipande has excelled in every dimension of radiology, from clinical care to education and research,” said Dr. Jonathan A. Epstein, Interim Executive Vice President of the University of Pennsylvania Health System and Dean of the Perelman School of Medicine.

“Her leadership comes at a pivotal moment as imaging technologies advance rapidly, reshaping healthcare delivery.”

Distinguished Career and National Leadership

Dr. Pandharipande is a prominent figure in the radiology community. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and chairs several key initiatives, including overseeing government relations.

Her extensive contributions also include roles with the American College of Radiology, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the American Cancer Society.

Pandharipande’s academic achievements underscore her dedication to advancing healthcare.

A graduate of Cornell University, she completed her medical training at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell and a diagnostic radiology residency at NYU Medical Center.

She pursued advanced fellowships in cancer outcomes research and abdominal imaging at MGH and earned a master’s degree in public health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Building on a Legacy of Excellence

Penn Medicine’s Department of Radiology, the world’s first academic radiology department, continues to lead the field in imaging innovation and research.

Established in 1898, the department spans eight divisions and boasts over 100 distinguished faculty members.

Imaging research at Penn Medicine integrates expertise across four schools and more than 20 departments, pushing the boundaries of discovery and application.

As the incoming Chair, Dr. Pandharipande will build on the foundation laid by Dr. Mitchell Schnall. Under his leadership, the department achieved national recognition for advancing imaging sciences.

During the transition, Dr. William Stavropoulos, an internationally renowned interventional radiologist, will continue to serve as interim Chair.

“Penn Medicine’s Department of Radiology has a legacy of excellence in clinical care, research, and education,” Dr. Pandharipande said. “I am honored to lead this exceptional team and look forward to collaborating with my colleagues to shape the future of radiology.”

A Future-Focused Approach

Dr. Pandharipande’s appointment signals Penn Medicine’s commitment to advancing imaging science and delivering unparalleled patient care.

Her proven leadership in multidisciplinary collaboration and technology integration will undoubtedly set new benchmarks for radiology in the years to come.

As healthcare continues to evolve, Penn Medicine Radiology is poised to remain at the forefront, driven by a visionary leader with a passion for innovation and excellence.
