Indian American technology leader Satya Nadella will receive the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the United States’ highest honor for technological achievement.
The White House disclosed the recognition on Oct. 7, one day before President Donald Trump was scheduled to present the medal at a science and technology summit in Washington. Nadella, Microsoft’s chairman and chief executive officer, is being honored alongside Dell Technologies founder and CEO Michael Dell.
Administered by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the medal recognizes individuals, teams and companies whose technological contributions strengthen American competitiveness, living standards and quality of life. More than 240 laureates have received it since the first awards were presented in 1985.
Nadella has led Microsoft as CEO since February 2014 and became chairman in 2021. During his tenure, the company accelerated its shift toward cloud computing, expanded the Azure platform and made artificial intelligence central to its product strategy. Microsoft now incorporates AI across business software, developer tools, cybersecurity services and consumer products.
He joined Microsoft in 1992 and held leadership roles across enterprise and consumer businesses before becoming CEO. As executive vice president of the Cloud and Enterprise group, he helped guide the company’s transformation into a major provider of cloud infrastructure and services.
Originally from Hyderabad, India, Nadella moved to the United States at age 21 to pursue a master’s degree in computer science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He later earned an MBA from the University of Chicago. He lives in Bellevue, Washington with his family.
The award adds a federal distinction to a career that has helped shape one of America’s most influential technology companies. It also recognizes the role of an Indian immigrant in the development of cloud computing and artificial intelligence at national scale.
Nadella’s selection places him among American innovators recognized for lasting contributions to technology and the economy. The honor reflects more than three decades of work at Microsoft and his leadership during a period of rapid change in how people and organizations use computing.
