In a significant leadership change, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has appointed Dr. Madhu Gottumukkala as the Commissioner of the Bureau of Information and Telecommunications (BIT) and Chief Information Officer (CIO).
His appointment will be effective from Monday, September 9.
Dr. Gottumukkala, who previously served as the state’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), steps into this critical dual role after over 20 years of IT experience.
Governor Noem mentioned Dr. Gottumukkala’s expertise in improving South Dakota’s IT infrastructure and prioritizing citizen data protection. “Madhu is the right person to carry the momentum forward. He will focus on putting our citizens first, protecting their data, and helping all of the state government serve the people of South Dakota,” said Governor Noem.
Dr. Gottumukkala expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him, stating, “I’m truly honored to step into this role. I look forward to driving innovative and secure technology solutions that enhance our state’s digital infrastructure.”
His academic credentials include a Master of Science in Computer Science Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington, an MBA in Engineering and Technology Management from the University of Dallas, and a PhD in Information Systems from Dakota State University. He also serves on the Advisory Committee of the College of Business and Information Systems at Dakota State University.
Outside of work, Dr. Gottumukkala and his family – wife Vasantha and their two sons, aged 17 and 13 are avid outdoor enthusiasts. They have explored every state park in South Dakota, enjoying camping, hiking, and spending time by lakes.
Further, Dr. Gottumukkala is a passionate motorcycle enthusiast and is constantly researching emerging technologies, which continue to shape both his professional and personal life.
