Cal Poly Humboldt Names Climate-Policy Trailblazer Anand Gopal a 2025 Distinguished Alumni Honoree

California Polytechnic State University (Humboldt) has selected environmental strategist Anand Gopal for its prestigious 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award, recognizing a career spent transforming climate policy and clean-energy innovation on the global stage. The Chennai-born, Bay Area–based executive—now CEO of consultancy Elar Strategies—joins a cohort of only five graduates honored this year for exemplary professional impact and community service.

From Arcata Grad Student to Global Climate-Policy Architect

Gopal’s Humboldt journey began in 2001 in the M.S. environmental-systems program. Two decades later, his résumé reads like a climate-leadership roadmap:
•    Energy Innovation – Directed a 30-member team modeling decarbonization pathways now guiding policymakers on four continents.
•    Hewlett Foundation – Managed a $100 million clean-power grant portfolio, funding India’s solar auctions and U.S. community-solar pilots.
•    Lawrence Berkeley National Lab – Oversaw international energy-policy research that shaped building-sector emissions standards.

In 2023 he founded Elar Strategies, advising governments and nonprofits on cutting emissions while boosting economic livelihoods—a dual mandate that mirrors Humboldt’s sustainability ethos.

Why This Matters Beyond One Campus

Visibility boost – Elevates South Asian American leadership in a field still dominated by Euro-Atlantic voices.
Policy validation – Shows how academic research can steer billion-dollar climate investments.
Alumni storytelling – Humboldt leverages honorees like Gopal to inspire students and court green-tech philanthropy.

The Award & Its Impact

Since 1960 Cal Poly Humboldt’s Distinguished Alumni honor recognizes graduates who “embody excellence, innovation, and service.” Honorees headline the fall gala, guest-lecture in classrooms, and mentor student capstone teams. Expect Gopal to run workshops on equitable electrification and career chats for first-gen STEM majors.
