Formation Bio appoints Anirvan Ghosh head of translational sciences

Indian American neuroscientist and biotechnology executive Anirvan Ghosh has joined Formation Bio as senior vice president and head of translational sciences, bringing decades of experience in academic research, pharmaceutical development and biotech leadership to the New York-based company.

Formation Bio announced the appointment Oct. 8. In the role, Ghosh will help determine which drug candidates enter the company’s portfolio and what evidence each program must generate before advancing. The company uses artificial intelligence and technology platforms to make drug development and clinical trials more efficient.

Ghosh joins Formation Bio from Unity Biotechnology, where he served as chief executive officer. Before that, he was senior vice president and head of research and early development at Biogen. There, he led about 350 scientists and clinicians across therapeutic areas and oversaw 10 programs that entered human studies.

Earlier in his industry career, Ghosh was the founding chief scientific officer of E-Scape Bio and vice president, global head of neuroscience discovery and biomarkers at Roche. Those positions placed him at the intersection of discovery research, clinical strategy and decisions about which experimental medicines warrant further investment.

Anirvan Ghosh

His career began in academia. Ghosh served on the faculty of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine before becoming the Stephen Kuffler Professor of Neurobiology and chair of neurobiology at the University of California San Diego. His laboratory studied how synapses form and how neural circuits develop.

Born in Bloomington, Indiana and raised in Kanpur, India, Ghosh returned to the United States for college. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Caltech and a doctorate in neuroscience from Stanford University, then completed postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School.

At Formation Bio, Ghosh will apply that research and operating background to the company’s expanding drug portfolio. His appointment places an Indian American scientist in a senior role shaping how an American AI-focused pharmaceutical company selects programs, studies patient data and moves potential medicines toward clinical proof of concept.
