Indiana University has appointed Indian American academic leader Rahul Shrivastav as vice president for student success, giving him responsibility for university-wide efforts to improve student experiences and graduation outcomes.
The appointment took effect immediately. Shrivastav had served in the role on an interim basis since February after previously leading IU Bloomington as provost and executive vice president.
As vice president, Shrivastav will oversee student-success strategy across Indiana University’s nine campuses. His portfolio includes enrollment services, academic and curricular processes and programs designed to help students progress toward their degrees and prepare for their careers.
He will work with campus leaders, faculty and student-support professionals to identify barriers to academic achievement. His responsibilities also include strengthening support systems and developing approaches that help students remain enrolled, graduate on time and make full use of university resources.
Shrivastav will continue leading IU’s university-wide work involving artificial intelligence. That initiative covers curriculum development, teaching and assessment practices, experiential learning and technology-supported student services. A major goal is preparing students for professions being reshaped by AI while exploring more personalized academic support.
As IU Bloomington provost, Shrivastav helped guide enrollment growth and launched 25 academic programs connected to student and workforce demand. The new programs expanded the university’s work in bioengineering, cybersecurity, microelectronics, artificial intelligence, machine learning and quantum information science.
He also supported expanded experiential-learning opportunities, partnerships with employers and community organizations, facility modernization and collaboration across academic disciplines.
Shrivastav earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Mysore in India before completing a doctorate in speech and hearing sciences at IU Bloomington. His earlier career included tenured faculty appointments and leadership positions at the University of Florida, Michigan State University and the University of Georgia.
IU President Pamela Whitten said Shrivastav’s experience in enrollment, academic programming and student services positions him to lead the university’s broader student-success strategy. The appointment gives an Indian American educator a senior role affecting students across one of the nation’s largest public university systems.
