From Science to Public Service

Dr. Patel’s journey to public service is marked by perseverance and dedication. As the daughter of Indian immigrants, she faced adversity at an early age, losing her mother at the age of 14.

This personal tragedy inspired her to pursue a career in medical research, eventually earning a B.A. in Biochemistry from Occidental College and a Ph.D. in Biophysics from the University of California, Irvine.

She later built a successful career in biotechnology before shifting her focus to community service and leadership.

Her community leadership roles include:

  • President of the Poway Unified School District Board, where she worked to improve education policies.
  • President of the San Diego County School Boards Association, representing regional schools.
  • A member of the San Diego Police Department’s Captain’s Advisory Board, supporting public safety initiatives.
  • A leader on the Rancho Peñasquitos Planning Board and Town Council, advocating for community development.
  • A commissioner on the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs, where she promoted inclusion and diversity.

As a legislator, Dr. Patel aims to focus on five key priorities:

Public Safety: Introducing policies to protect communities and enhance local law enforcement.

Reproductive Rights: Protecting access to reproductive healthcare for women.

Education: Increasing funding for public schools and supporting students and teachers.

Healthcare Access: Expanding affordable healthcare options for residents.

Homelessness: Implementing sustainable measures to reduce homelessness in her district.

Her experience in the biotechnology sector and leadership roles in education and community safety position her as a capable advocate for these initiatives.
