Emerson has appointed Indian American technology executive Rudy Sengupta as senior vice president, chief technology and AI officer, effective Aug. 15. He will join the St. Louis-based company’s Office of the Chief Executive and guide technology and artificial intelligence strategy across its industrial software, control and intelligent-device businesses.

Sengupta succeeds Peter Zornio, who is scheduled to retire Dec. 31 after two decades with Emerson. The transition places Sengupta in a central role as the global automation company expands its use of AI across products and operations.

He currently serves as vice president and general manager of Test and Analytics Software within Emerson’s Test & Measurement business. Sengupta joined Emerson through its acquisition of NI, formerly National Instruments, where he spent about two decades in engineering, product management and business leadership.

In his current position, Sengupta has helped move the software business toward integrated test workflows and data analytics while increasing the use of recurring-revenue models. Emerson also credits him with leading the addition of AI-driven capabilities designed to improve how engineers test, measure and analyze complex systems.

His experience spans software-defined test automation, research and development, corporate strategy and operations. Earlier in his career, he helped define field-programmable gate array-based measurement and control instruments and led work across global, cross-functional teams.

Sengupta earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, focusing on embedded systems and communication networks. He remains connected to the university as a member of the Cockrell School of Engineering Advisory Board and previously served on an advisory board for its electrical and computer engineering department.

Outside Emerson, Sengupta serves on the board of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area.

In his new position, Sengupta will help set Emerson’s long-term technology direction and work with teams across the company to accelerate innovation. His appointment also gives an Indian American executive a prominent leadership role at one of the nation’s major industrial technology companies.
